The toughest part of PM certification is that not everyone can take it. You need project management experience. If you have a bachelor’s degree then you must have 3 years of project experience. Even as a non-graduate you can take the PMP® certification exam if you have 5 years of project experience.

PMP® certification is valid for 3 years. And has to be renewed. To renew you need to earn and claim 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) from PMI. There is a fee for renewal of $60, if you are a member of PMI, for non-members the renewal fee is 150$ Your PMP® License Number remains the same even after renewal.

PDU stands for Professional Development Units and are a measuring unit to quantify approved continuous learning and professional services activities. PDUs should be earned through both these groups
  1. Educational PDUs : These include continued learning, self-directed learning and courses offered by PMI’s R.E.P.s, chapters, communities, and G.A.C.
  2. Giving back to the profession PDUs that include creating knowledge, volunteer work and working as a professional
  • Check your eligibility before starting the application.
  • PMI Application process is recommended to be done after taking PMI membership
  • The application can be submitted online
  • Application once initiated needs to be submitted within 90 days. Else the draft application is removed.
  • PMI normally reviews and approves the application within 1-2 weeks after submission
  • PMI communicates via email. Status can be accept, reject or query mode
  • For query, the applicant needs to revise as per suggestions from PMI and resubmitted.
  • If Application does not meet the required criteria, the application might get rejected and fees be refunded back after deducting the processing fee ($100)
PMI allows its members 3 attempts in 1 calendar year. If the candidate does not clear in a year, the 4th attempt can be done only after a wait of 1 year. Membership needs to be taken for this. In one year 3 attempts for 1 membership.
